The 2014 Golden Bear Regatta was sailed out of Treasure Island Sailing Center for the third year this past weekend. The 64 new sets of PCISA sails arrived in California just in time and the sailors had the privilege of hoisting brand new sails right out of the plastic bags on Saturday morning. With the new sails the PCISA allowed 64 teams to participate even though the regular regatta cap is 60. The Bay Area Youth Sailing Board worked hard to install all the floating docks for launching and rotations, since TISC keeps them in the parking lot during the winter.

After attending the US Sailing’s leadership conference last week in San Diego with 650+ attendees, I came away with a lot of ideas so we can improve junior sailing from the high school sailing point of view. I believe we fit in a box that is simple and structured. We are not trying to change any aspect of youth sailing other than creating a team sport that becomes important for high school students. The message from the conference was to learn as much as you can but come away with 5 key items that can use in your organization
The new PCISA sails have arrived in the United States and we anticipate using them at the Golden Bear Regatta. Thus we are going to begin selling the old sails. In order to do this, we need to gauge interest in purchasing these sails. It is likely that we will need to use some sort of lottery and/or allocation system as we anticipate interest to exceed supply. In this first round we are only going to sell half of the sails (30 sets).
Zander Kirkland was a top high school sailor at Tabor Academy from 1998-2002. Following high school, he sailed at Tufts University (Medford, MA). Following Tufts, Zander was hired as the head coach of Newport Harbor High School’s 2009 National Championship Team.
Zander left NHHS in 2010 to pursue his Olympic sailing dream with his brother Jesse (another Tabor sailing team graduate), and together they would represent Bermuda in the 49er Class in the 2012 London Olympics.
