2007 Spring Newsletter

As the spring season gets under way, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Notices of Race for the three NESSA Spring Regattas have been posted on the NESSA website (http://nessa-sailing.org/race.htm). Please note that the registration dates are approaching quickly.

NESSA Team Racing Championship (Mark Trophy) – Thursday April 5, 2007

NESSA Fleet Racing Championship (O’Day Trophy) – Thursday April 5, 2007

NESSA Women’s Invite (Herreshoff Trophy) –Monday April 30, 2007; but this is a first come, first served event limited to 15 schools.

If your school plans to participate in one or more of these NESSA events, please follow the registration directions carefully. (NB: Registrations and checks for the NESSA Teams can be sent to Doug Heil at the address listed on the website). Each year, there are a few schools that don’t get their act together and miss the deadline.  Save us all a lot of crying and bad feelings.  Take care of your business now and enjoy the season. Doug will be sending out a list of schools that have registered for each regatta in a few days.

Coaches, Advisors and/or Team Captains: Make sure your school's team database page is up-to-date, including sailor’s names. Please note: Evan will only approve requests made by the “official team adult,” coach, advisor or school administrator.  All others will be rejected.    http://www.highschoolsailingusa.org/directory/district.asp?ID=NESSA

E-Mail Lists:

A reminder of the NESSA e-mailing list policies:

No auto-responses or away messages.  If you need to set one up for work, please unsubscribe from the NESSA list.

ISSA has established a new e-mail distribution list.  It is self-serving list.  For those who wish to subscribe, the information can be found at: http://www.highschoolsailingusa.org/html/emailDistributionLists.html

ISSA Procedural Rules: Please note that ISSA updated their Procedural Rules. Please make sure that you review the new ISSA PR and are familiar with any changes before you start working with your students.

Specific changes were outlined in the ISSA Newsletter Summer/Fall 2006 on page 12 (http://www.highschoolsailingusa.org/CurrentNews/06SummerFallNewsletter.pdf).

An updated hard copy version was mailed to all coaches in December.

The updated electronic version is posted on the ISSA website  (http://www.highschoolsailingusa.org/PRs/PRs_2005/06Nov15proceduralRules.pdf)

Regatta Management:

If you are running a regatta this spring, here are some sites you should visit:

NESSA By-laws and Procedural Rules are at http://nessa-sailing.org/about.htm

ISSA Procedural Rules (2005-2008) are at http://www.highschoolsailingusa.org/PRs/PRs_2005/06Nov15proceduralRules.pdf

RP Forms (Race Participation Forms) are at http://www.collegesailing.org/forms

Results from all NESSA fleet racing regattas should be complied using the Navy Scoring Program. The Scoring Program is at http://highschoolsailingusa.org/Downloads/scoring_program.htm

NOR for, and results from, any high school regatta can be sent to the NESSA E-mail list.  NORs and results that are sent to the NESSA E-mail list may be posted by the NESSA on the NESSA website.

NESSA Team Race Standings – 2007.

Once again, NESSA will use a website that allows the results for every NESSA school that team races during the spring to be posted.

All schools that registered properly for the NESSA Team Racing Championship (Mark Trophy) must keep their scores updated if they want to be ranked at the end of the season.

Also schools that signed up for the NESSA Fleet Racing Championship (O’Day Trophy) should use this site to verify that they have sailed the required three meets or regattas before competing in the championship.

Here is how to post your school’s scores.

Make sure you know how to score a meet properly. This is the link to last year’s document, but the 2007 one is almost identical and should be ready for viewing by April 1. (http://taboracademy.net/sailing06/scoring_rules.htm)

The winning coach should e-mail Rob Hurd (RSHurd@hotmail.com) within 24 hours of the meet’s completion and CC the losing coach (full list of contact e-mail addresses can be found on the NESSA website. http://highschoolsailingusa.org/directory/district.asp?ID=NESSA

The e-mail should contain.

Date

Winning school and score

Losing score and score

Location of meet (home, away, neutral site)

Scores can be viewed at: http://taboracademy.net/sailing07/standings.asp

As the season progresses, we will be posting the computer rankings (Plan J), but that won’t happened until enough schools who have registered for the NESSA Team Racing Championship reach the mandatory 7 meets needed for consideration.

Information on ”Wild Card Weekend,” which is May 12-13, will be e-mailed out in April.

lease address any questions, comments, or concerns to me.  The hope is that this system will help make the selection process more open and public.

Have a great spring season.
