Statement from the NESSA Executive Committee (2020-3-23)

Following up on the ISSA Statement dated March 19, 2020 (see below) regarding the Spring 2020 High School sailing season, the NESSA Officers and Executive Committee want to clarify the following for our member schools.

  • The 2020 Spring Championships and their qualifiers are cancelled for the Spring. This includes the O’Day, the Herreshoff, the Presidents and the Terk.
  • There will be no State Championships this spring.
  • There should be no High School sailing activities that violate any state, local or school rules until May 1, 2020.  ISSA will make its next determination on the rest of the Spring season on April 2, 2020.
  • If ISSA lifts the ban on High School sailing, NESSA will release guidelines for a NESSA/ISSA sanctioned event.

These are extraordinary times. NESSA reiterates the ISSA Statement. “We make this decision out of an abundance of care and the safety of our athletes, their parents, the coaches, the race officials, & the volunteers. While it is disappointing to all of us, we know it is the responsible thing to do at this time.”  We are deeply saddened for the members of the class of 2020, who lose the opportunity to showcase their talents on a New England and National stage.  But, we stand hopeful that life will return to “normal” and that we will all be able to get back on the water soon.
