2001 Team Race PCC’s

The PCISA team race championships were held on April 28 - 29, 2001, hosted by The San Francisco Yacht Club. The venue was San Francisco Bay, in the Richmond Harbor channel. Richmond Yacht Club was kind enough to allow the regatta to use their harbor and access. Seven teams participated: Corona del Mar HS (Corona del Mar), Coronado HS (Coronado), Marin Catholic HS (Kentfield), Newport Harbor HS (Newport Beach), Redwood HS (Larkspur), Robert Louis Stevenson School (Pebble Beach) and University of San Diego High School (San Diego).

Two evenly matched 6 boat fleets were provided by the SFYC youth training program for the competition. One fleet consisted of 2001 vintage Vanguard boats, the other fleet consisted of 1999 vintage Johnson boats. Sails were provided by PCISA. Two full round robins (42 races) were completed, then a "final four" round robin was sailed, for a total of 48 races. On Saturday the first race was started at approximately 11:00 am. Skies were partly cloudy, with wind speeds of 10 - 12 knots. As the day cleared, the breeze built steadily. Most of the races were run in wind speeds of 12 - 15 knots. Because the wind and tide were in the same direction for almost the whole day, the water was relatively flat. The final races were run at approximately 6:00 pm. 34 races were run on Saturday. On Sunday the first races were run at approximately 11:00 am in sunny conditions with wind speeds of 8 - 10 knots, building to 12 - 15 knots during the day. The second round robin was completed, and the final four round robin commenced. The last race was run and the sailors left the course area at 2:00 pm. Racing was generally tight, and the final results had to go to tiebreakers for first and second place as well as third and fourth place.

Final results are indicated below:

Overall it was a very good weekend of sailing, with plenty of racing. I want to thank all of the teams for their participation, as well as thanking The San Francisco and Richmond Yacht Clubs for their support. I'm confident that PCISA will be well represented at Tabor.
